Heavenly View I

In May 2023 we flew to Italy and I took a few photos from the plane as we flew over the Alps. Blue has always been one of my favourite colours and I love the fact that so many different shades can be generated from just three pigments: cerulean, cobalt and ultramarine - oh and quite a lot of white too. I think there is something very uplifting about these sort of scenes. It’s the thought of going somewhere exciting, warm, welcoming, or whatever you travel for.

Scarista Beach, Harris

My daughter visited the Island of Harris with her boyfriend and 2023 and sent me some photos of her trip. I loved this view and so I painted it. When I showed it to my daughter and boyfriend when they visited they both laughed. It turns out that they love the view too (and the painting) and both have it as the screen saver on their phones.

Luirboist Loch, Isle of Lewis

My daughter visited the Island of Lewis and Harris with her boyfriend in 2023 and sent me some photos of her trip. After I had painted the first one she begged me to do this one. I love the calm feel of the boats moored in the Loch. There’s something so tranquil and alluring about the whole mood.

Sunset over the Wash

In September 2021 we went to north Norfolk for a short break and one early evening my husband and daughter went swimming in the Wash. While they were splashing around and visited by a harbour seal, my son and I walked along the beach and I took photos of the setting sun. This painting is from one of those photos.

Summer Solstice Sunrise

My friend Nikki who lives in Cape Town kindly let me use a photo she took of the 2021 summer solstice sunrise. I thought long and hard about how to reproduce the glowing sky and in the end I opted to use a bright yellow underpainting and then add the reds and blues with glazes so that the yellow still shone through. This is basically the technique that was used to paint jewels by artists like Jan Van Eyck in the early 15th Century. I like to think I’m doing the same thing in my own little way.

View from High Wray Farm

In July 2021 we stayed at High Wray Farm on Lake Windermere. This is the view from the field on the other side of the road, complete with a couple of the farm’s fat lambs grazing and the lake in the background.

The Rotunda at the Ickworth

We stayed at the Ickworth, just outside Bury St Edmunds a few years ago and I was very taken by the stunning rotunda set in very formal gardens. I took a photo at the time and have only just got round to painting it.

Lake Windermere, Lake District

I painted this for the Landscape Artists UK FaceBook Group April Art Challenge. It’s based on a photo of Lake Windermere by a member of the group. I plan to visit the Lake District later in the year and there will the be more paintings of this beautiful area.

Islands in the Sea of Marmara

If you ever visit Istanbul you must take the ferry to Princes Islands. It’s very cheap and you get to travel across the sea of Marmara and take photos like the one this painting is based upon. I couldn’t resist the way the sun sparkled on the sea and I loved the fact that I only used white and indigo paint for the whole thing.

View from Heybaliaga

Heybaliaga is one of the Princes Islands in the Sea of Marmara. These are beautiful little islands far from the madness that is Istanbul and yet only an hour or so distant by ferry. I loved this view through foliage of Burgazada, the smallest of the islands with its town tumbling down the hillside towards the sea.

Sunset-over-Alderney.jpg

Alderney sunset

There is something magical about the sun setting on the sea and I couldn’t resist painting this photograph taken some years ago on a family holiday in Alderney. I loved all the colours in the sky from pale pinks and purples through indigo blues and vibrant oranges and reds. It was a challenge not letting the colours leach into each other and become muddy but a huge thrill when it all worked out.

Sunrise-over-Cape-Town.jpg

Sunrise over Cape Town

I have a friend who lives in Cape Town and is an amazing photographer. From time to time she lets me use her photos as references for paintings and this is one of them. This was taken early morning from her patio. I love the colours in the sky and the sparkling lights of the city beneath

Early morning Cape Town

This is another painting based on one of my South African friend’s photos. There are so many colours in this sky and I loved how the different strata needed different painting techniques. I was also very taken by the wispy mist that lurks just above the surface of the land and the solitary tree silhouetted against it.
