Pink Stars in the Sky

In the early spring of 2024 I noticed the way the flowers on my clematis armandii sparked as they grew through my neighbour’s overgrown leylandii trees. I waited for the right day to take the photo and here’s the painting. Only a few weeks later my neighbour cut down the trees and the flowers disappeared. They’ll be back next year but the trees won’t be so high.

Ashdown Forest Waterfall

Ashdown Forest is a place of wonder and magic. Mostly it’s heathland with stunning views but centuries ago it was also the centre of the iron industry and it is said that the ships that fought the Armada were made from iron and oak from Ashdown Forest. Nowadays this means that if you wander the forest you will stumble across little streams, pools and waterfalls where the water and the rocks are tinted russet from the iron in the soil. I couldn’t resist painting this image. There’s something so luxurious about the red earth pigments and it was lovely to use so many of them in this.

Sunset over Beachy Head Light House, Sussex

This is the second one of my paintings of Beachy Head Lighthouse. I love the comparative vulnerability of the lighthouse beneath those golden cliffs. Of course the cliffs are actually chalk but when the sun is setting they glow the most amazing colour.

Beachy Head Light House, Sussex

There are two light houses near Beachy Head in Sussex Head. One is called Belle Tout and can just be seen at the top of the final cliff in my painting of the Seven Sisters. The other is the Beach Head Light House which nestles at the foot of Beach Head. I love painting the sea at sunset or sunrise and so I just had to paint this.

The Pantiles, Tunbridge Wells

The Pantiles in Tunbridge Wells is a well known tourist destination in the South East. In 2022 I was commissioned to do a painting of it for a lovely lady who lives in the town. (You can see an image of that painting on the Commissions section of my Portfolio). This little painting comes from one of the photos I took in preparation for that commission.

The Cuckmere River from High and Over

The Cuckmere River is the iconic river of Sussex and there are so many paintings of it as it meanders down to Cuckmere Haven and the English Channel. This painting is the view from the delightfully named High and Over in Seaford. The hill in the distance to the right is Seaford Head and the hills on the left are the Seven Sisters.

St-James's-Park.jpg

Buckingham Palace from St James’s Park

This painting of Buckingham Palace is based on a photo I took whist walking across St James’s park one September evening on the way to a meeting. I loved the sky and the way it reflected in the water.

A friend kindly let me use his photo of Limehouse Basin as the basis of this painting. The sky was so spectacular and I loved the colour it turned the Thames.

Stream-in-Walshes-Park-Crowborough-Winter.jpg

Sussex stream in Winter

This is the stream in a park near where I live. I love walking the dog beside it and it seems to change every time I go there. This particular winter day the stream and its banks seemed to make an almost abstract pattern which was particularly attractive.

Sussex stream in Early Spring

This is the stream in a park near where I live. I love walking the dog beside it and it seems to change every time I go there. On this particular early spring day the stream and its banks looked especially verdant.

Bluebells-in-Darchs-Wood.jpg

Bluebells in Darch’s Wood

We sometimes walk our dog in Darch’s Wood in Heathfield, East Sussex. This year the bluebells were spectacular. I love the way the flowers range in colour from deepest ultramarine to almost white depending on how the sunlight falls on them.

Summer Evening

This was painted for the March challenge on the Landscape Artists UK FaceBook Group and I was more than a little pleased that it achieved first place. The reference photograph was provided by a member of the group and is of a view near Windmill Hill Woods, in Ludgershall, Wiltshire. I loved the way the sunlight burst through the tree branches and the golden tone of the overall picture.

Wood’s Mill

Wood’s Mill is the Sussex Wildlife Trust HQ at Henfield in West Sussex. There is a nature reserve there and I went for a guided walk around it early in 2022. I loved the smoke rising from a chimney in the far distance and the lush greens in the foreground.

Fields-south-of-Crowborough.jpg

Fields south of Crowborough

This is the view I see when I take my dog for a walk sometimes. It’s very peaceful and you can’t hear anything but bird song but it’s only walkable in dry weather. When it’s wet you can sink up to your knees in sticky clay.

Cattle grazing

I took the photo this is based upon on the way to the pub one evening. Sadly the field where the cattle are grazing is soon to be covered with housing and so I had to paint this to preserve the beauty that once was there.

Sussex by-way

This is the by-way we walk to get to the pub and it looks lovely dappled in sunlight. Sadly it won’t be like this much longer as the fields on either side are soon to be covered with houses and I just can’t see this byway staying the same once that happens.

Seven Sisters

This is the iconic view of Sussex - Seven Sisters as viewed from Seaford Head. In Spring 2020 I went on a walk around the nature reserve at Seaford Head and took the reference photo for this picture as we reached the top of the hill. The sky was stunning and I knew I had to paint it.

Hidden_lake.jpg

Hidden Lake

This is based on a photo I took in September 2020 of the lake in the grounds of Arundel Castle in East Sussex. Although the lake itself isn’t hidden as you walk around it you get these views which seem like you are a looking in on a hidden world. Everything was so green and lush it begged to be painted.

Arundel Castle

This is based on a photo I took in September 2020 of Arundel Castle in East Sussex. I loved the way the castle seemed to loom over the pathway below. We were lucky enough to visit before the robbery there a few months later when the exquisite gold rosary which Mary Queen of Scots took to the scaffold, was stolen.
