On the Levee at Bude, Cornwall

In May 2022 we spent a few nights staying in Bude in Cornwall. The weather was lovely and we went on wonderful walks along the cliffs. This is the view from the man-made levee that protects the harbour. I loved the difference in texture between the smooth rocks of the levee and the weird natural forms of the rocks off shore.

Let’s go for a walk

This painting was submitted for the December2020 art challenge on the UK Landscape Artists FaceBook group and was one of the three winners. It’s based on a reference photo by one of the group members and shows a hill in Gloucestershire. I thought it looked like a lovely place to go for a walk.

Summer Evening

This was painted for the March 2022 challenge on the Landscape Artists UK FaceBook Group and I was more than a little pleased that it achieved first place. The reference photograph was provided by a member of the group and is of a view near Windmill Hill Woods, in Ludgershall, Wiltshire. I loved the way the sunlight burst through the tree branches and the golden tone of the overall picture.

Formal-garden-at-Athelhampton-House.jpg

Formal Gardens at Athelhampton House

I loved the symmetry of the formal gardens at Athelhampton House and couldn’t resist photographing and then painting them. The fountain was a challenge but I remembered how Jan Van Eyck had painted water in the Ghent Altarpiece back in the early fifteenth century and decided to do the same as him. So studying art history for all those years actually paid off!

Lulworth-Cove.jpg

Man O War Beach

We walked down the pathway to Lulworth Cove, which is just behind the last headland on the right of this picture, and goodness, it was steep. Up on the cliff though the view was stunning. I loved the different colours in the water caused by the seaweed and the gentle ripples of the sea which make a sort of frill around the line of Man O War Beach.

Maiden-Castle-Dorset.jpg

Maiden Castle

Maiden Castle in Dorset is one of the largest and most complex Iron Age hillforts in Europe. We visited just before the sun started to set and I couldn’t resist painting it with the great ball of fire hovering in sky just above the grassy mounds that mark the castle walls.

Misty-St-Oswald's-Bay.jpg

St Oswald’s Bay

The mist was coming down over the distant cliffs overlooking St Oswald’s Bay in Dorset as I took this photo and I couldn’t resist painting it. I used less saturated tones for the misty cliffs and then overlaid a cloudy glaze to intensify the effect.

Llandudno.jpg

Llandudno

This is the view of Llandudno from the end of the pier. If it weren’t for Snowdonia in the background you might think it was the South of France and it certainly felt like that in the warm April sun when we were there. Hard to believe that mountain goats were wandering the streets during lockdown a year later when I painted this picture.

Stream-at-Athelhampton-House-Dorset.jpg

Stream at Athelhampton House

I loved the way the plants were reflected in the stream at Athelhampton House and how the flow of water dragged some of the along the gravel in the foreground. Reflections in water are one of my favourite subjects and painting this was great fun.

View-from-the-Inn-at-Newbridge-on-Usk.jpg

Newbridge on Usk

This was the scene from the breakfast table at the Inn at Newbridge On Usk and I couldn’t resist painting it. It was a miserable morning resulting in mist shrouded trees in the distance and the steely colour of the water.

Waterfall-in-the-Hidden-Gardens-Plas-Cadnant-Anglesey.jpg

Waterfall at Plas Cadnant, Anglesey

The Hidden Gardens at Plas Cadnant on Anglesey are a delight and this was the waterfall hidden in the Hidden Gardens themselves. I couldn’t believe the turquoise colour of the water and loved the contrast made by the foam against the water and the dark rocks. I enjoyed the challenge of this painting with the precision needed for the rocks one the one hand and the freedom of painting the water on the other.
