Filey Beach

In September 2022 we visited Filey in North Yorkshire. There is a stunning expanse of beach there and we loved walking along it as the sun was setting. The cliffs in the scene are Flamborough Head where there is a bird sanctuary and puffins can be seen at the right time of year.

Filey Brigg

Here’s another painting from a photo I took on our September 2022 visit to Filey in North Yorkshire. Filey Brigg is a spit of land which extends out into the sea just to the north of the town. The sky was amazing the evening I took this picture and I loved the way the setting sun just brightened up the brigg cliffs as they joined the mainland.

Bamburgh-Beach-I.jpg

Bamburgh Beach I

This was such a tranquil scene with fluffy clouds with only a hint of heaviness and a quiet sea. There’s a satisfying mix of textures in this painting with the shrubby dunes that line Bamburgh beach in the foreground, the flatness of the sand and sea and the puffy clouds above.

Bamburgh=Beach-II.jpg

Bamburgh Beach II

This is the second of the scenes I painted of Bamburgh beach in Northumberland. The sky was so dramatic I couldn’t resist it especially given the contrast between the bright blue on the right hand side and ominous grey/indigo of the left.

Bamburgh-Beach-III.jpg

Bamburgh Beach III

This is the third painting of Bamburgh beach and a contrast with the others as the sea and the sky were so calm this day. I loved painting the little ripples of waves on the shore and the wispy clouds in the sky. This is by far the most relaxing of the three paintings.

Barnard-Castle.jpg

Barnard Castle

During lockdown Barnard Castle acquired a degree of notoriety. When we visited we weren’t able to get into the castle itself but we were advised where to go for the best view. We were then treated with a spectacular cloud formation behind the castle which begged to be painted.

Egglestone-Abbey.jpg

Egglestone Abbey

A short distance from Barnard Castle in County Durham is Egglestone Abbey. The remains of the abbey lie in a field with a small car park and none of the normal heritage paraphernalia like shops or ticket offices. It’s an idyllic setting and I tried to capture some of that feeling of serenity and calm in this painting

Brooding-sky-over-calm-sea.jpg

Brooding skies

This was painted as a submission to an art challenge on the UK Landscape Artists FaceBook group in October 2020 and was one of the three winners. One of the group members from the North East offered the reference photo and I couldn’t resist it. The sky is so dramatic and I’m rather fond of painting rocks too.

Lindisfarne-Castle.jpg

Lindisfarne Castle

Sadly we weren’t able to go inside Lindisfarne Castle as it had still not opened after the spring 2020 lockdown but we still enjoyed our trip. It’s a fantastically wild and bleak place and I hope some of that comes through in the painting.

HIgh-Force-Teesdale.jpg

High Force, Teesdale

I’ve wanted to visit High Force for years and when we finally got there it was an overcast day and there had been a lot of rain which made for a long a muddy walk to see the waterfall. But it was well worth it. I loved the fungus laden tree in the foreground and I think it gives the painting more depth.
